History of
The Tiger I was a German heavy tank used in World War II, from late 1942 until the German surrender in 1945. The tank design served as the basis for other armoured vehicles: the Sturmtiger heavy self-propelled gun and the Bergetiger armoured recovery vehicle. The Tiger's crew training manual, the Tigerfibel, became a souvenir item after the war. The tank was given its nickname Tiger listen by designer Ferdinand Porsche, and the Roman numeral was added after the later Tiger II entered production. The initial official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausfí¼hrung H (‘Panzer VI version HÂ’, abbreviated PzKpfw VI Ausf. H), but the tank was redesignated as PzKpfw VI Ausf. E in March 1943. The tank also had the ordnance inventory designation SdKfz 181.
