The Panzer IV was designed together with the Panzer III. The Panzer IV was slightly larger and heavier, and with a larger caliber cannon, having been designed to attack enemy positions.
The pre-war production was 211 tanks.
It was originally armed with a slow 75mm L/24 gun, in 1942 it was upgraded to a 75mm L/43 gun, and in 1944 to a 75mm L/48 gun.
