Sheriff The Sheriff was publicly elected by the population of a County and his time of office lasted four years The Sheriff could name his helpers who, were considered employees on time contracts. He was the executive official of police belonging to a tribunal or an administrative district and he could also be head of police ìn a large city. The Sheriff's duty was to maintain law and order, and make sure that arrest warrants and summons to appear in court were carried out, and also the enforcement of legal sentences of imprisonment which ìncluded escorting the condemned person to the State prison; while the death sentence might regard the organisation of the execution itself. The Sheriff also collected the district and territorial taxes, 5% of which he kept for himself.
