Description: Le Cerf, 1779-1780

The cutter LE CERF was designed by well-known French ship designer Denys. The CERF was launched on 2nd March, 1779 from Saint-Malo dock-yard. Command of the ship was entrusted to ensign Varages. The ship was equipped with eighteen 6pdr guns. The total number of ship crew was between 155 and 194 persons (this number includes officers, seamen, gunners and mariners). The CERF participated in several battles with the British during the American War of Independence. The first, with two cutters of fourteen and sixteen guns, occurred on the night of 21st June, 1779, southwest of the island of Yeu. During this battle the stem of the Cerf was quite badly damaged and a total of seventeen men were injured. Later, after necessary repairs, the CERF was made part of the fleet of J. P. Jones, a Captain of the United States (and the well-known Commander of the U.S. ship BONHOMME RICHARD). The CERF participated in a combat operation near the Irish coast. The CERF’s last battle was on 9th February, 1780, near the Azores Islands, where she fought with a British 24-gun privateer. The CERF was badly damaged during this battle and was inactive from service for a short time, but little is known of her subsequent actions.
